Deep Hole Drilling

Deep Hole Drilling Tech Blog

Real problems, real solutions, no fluff. I have spent years working across multiple shops running gun drilling, BTA drilling, and ejector drilling machines — setting up jobs, troubleshooting coolant pressure and chip evacuation issues, drilling deep holes in everything from hydraulic cylinders to aerospace titanium. This site is where I share what I have learned.

Deep Hole Drilling for Robotics and Automation Components

Robotics and automation equipment demand lightweight, stiff components that move quickly and position accurately. Deep hole drilling plays a role in reducing weight, routing cables, and creating fluid passages in robotic arms and end effectors. I have drilled components for industrial robots, collaborative robots, and custom automation cells. The materials are shifting from steel to aluminum and composites as robot speeds increase. The lightweight design approach has parallels in aerospace deep hole drilling where every gram of weight reduction matters. ...

Deep Hole Drilling for Rollers and Cylinders

Industrial rollers and large cylinders are used in paper mills, steel processing, textile manufacturing, printing, and material handling. These components are essentially long tubes with a precision bore that carries heating oil, cooling water, or simply serves as a structural element. I have machined rollers from 1 meter to 10 meters in length, with bore diameters from 20mm to 300mm. The length-to-diameter ratio is extreme – often 50:1 or more. That makes deep hole drilling the only practical way to produce the bore. ...

Deep Hole Drilling for Semiconductor Equipment Components

Semiconductor equipment might be the most demanding application for deep hole drilling outside of the medical industry. The components that go into wafer fabrication machines must meet extreme tolerances for cleanliness, dimensional accuracy, and material compatibility. I have drilled components for chemical vapor deposition chambers, physical vapor deposition systems, and wafer handling robots. The materials are almost always specialty grades of stainless steel, titanium, or aluminum, and every part must be contaminant-free. The precision requirements overlap with medical implant deep hole drilling in terms of cleanliness and tolerance, though the materials differ. ...

Deep Hole Drilling for Shipbuilding Applications

Shipbuilding involves some of the largest deep hole drilling work in the manufacturing industry. Marine propulsion shafts, rudder stocks, stern tubes, and steering gear components all require precision bores through massive forgings. The marine environment adds corrosion resistance requirements that affect material selection and drilling parameters. I have worked on components for cargo ships, tankers, naval vessels, and offshore support vessels. The scale of the parts changes everything about how you approach the job. The propeller shaft work shares techniques with marine drive shaft deep hole drilling and stern tube rudder stock drilling. ...

Deep Hole Drilling for Steam Turbine Rotors

Steam turbine rotors are large forgings that rotate at high speed inside the turbine casing. They need a through-bore running the full length for borescope inspection access and for balancing. In my experience, the bore is one of the most critical features of the rotor because it enables the periodic inservice inspections that prevent catastrophic failure. Rotor Specifications and Material Properties A typical steam turbine rotor might be 4-8 meters long with a 100-200mm bore. The material is a high-strength alloy steel like 3.5NiCrMoV. The rotor can weigh 20-50 tons, which makes handling a major consideration. ...

Deep Hole Drilling for Subsea Oil and Gas Components

Subsea oil and gas components live at the bottom of the ocean, under thousands of meters of water and hundreds of bar of pressure. A failure down there is not something you can repair with a service truck. I have been drilling subsea components for over a decade, and the standards are higher than anything else I have encountered in machining. This article covers what I have learned drilling deep holes in subsea valve bodies, connectors, manifolds, and christmas tree components. If you are new to subsea work, start with my overview of oil and gas deep hole drilling and the deep hole drilling guide for stainless steel. ...

Deep Hole Drilling for Textile Machinery Rollers and Spindles

Textile machinery is not the first industry that comes to mind for deep hole drilling, but it uses more drilled components than you would expect. Rollers, spindles, and guide shafts all need through-holes for heating, cooling, or weight reduction. I have worked on textile machinery components from machine builders in Europe and Asia. The work is similar to general long shaft drilling but with some specific requirements driven by the high-speed, continuous operation of textile production lines. See also textile heated roller drilling and textile spindle shafts gun drilling for component-specific details. ...

Deep Hole Drilling for Valve and Pump Components

Valves and pumps are everywhere in industrial equipment, and they all need deep holes drilled in them. From the valve body or pump housing to the spool bores and piston bores inside, the quality of the deep hole drilling determines whether the component seals properly or leaks. I have worked on valve and pump components for oil and gas, hydraulic systems, chemical processing, and water treatment. The requirements vary by industry, but the drilling principles are similar across all of them. ...

Deep Hole Drilling in Inconel 718: Parameters and Tooling

Inconel 718 is a nickel-based superalloy used in aerospace and power generation components. It retains its strength at high temperatures but is extremely difficult to machine. The material work-hardens rapidly and retains heat at the cutting edge. I have drilled hundreds of holes in Inconel 718 across multiple jobs. Every one was a battle against heat, work-hardening, and tool wear. Here is what works for me. Cutting Parameters for Inconel 718 The cutting speed is the single most critical parameter. Above 25 m/min, the edge degrades rapidly from heat. Below 15 m/min, the tool rubs instead of cutting and work-hardens the surface. I start at 20 m/min and adjust based on tool life. ...

Deep Hole Drilling in Titanium: Parameters, Tool Life, and Coolant Strategies

Titanium is the material that separates experienced deep hole drilling shops from the rest. I have drilled more titanium holes than I can count — here is what I have learned about making them consistently. Every titanium alloy behaves differently. Get the parameters wrong on one alloy and you lose the tool, the part, or both. Get them right across the board and titanium becomes predictable. I cover the broader aerospace deep hole drilling landscape in another article. This one is specifically about titanium parameters, tool life, and coolant — the three things that matter most when the material is titanium. ...
