I match the coating to the material temperature at the cutting edge. TiAlN works well up to 800°C. AlTiN handles 900°C and is better for superalloys. Diamond coating is for aluminum only — the high chemical affinity of diamond to iron makes it unsuitable for steel.
Head Diameter and Tolerance Matching
The head diameter determines the final hole size within ±0.1mm. I select the head diameter based on the print tolerance:
- For IT7 (H7 fit), I choose a head diameter at the low end of the tolerance band. The guide pads wear slightly and the hole opens up over the tool life.
- For IT8-IT9, I choose a head diameter at the midpoint. The wider tolerance gives more room for head wear.
